8 days, 200 shirts · by Rafi Kam

As Count Bass D once said, “it’s another milestone.” (Never mind that he rhymed that with “I love Paula Poundstone”. That’s an irrelevant footnote at best, befitting a parenthetical.)

It is another milestone in our venture selling Jay Dee benefit shirts.

The 200th shirt was ordered earlier this hour. The order came from Spain. We’ve had orders and inquiries from all over: Sweden, France, the UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Uganda, Hong Kong.

I ordered 240 shirts at the start of the week which should be arriving at my new temporary home any day now. XXL and Ladies cut shirts were being re-stocked so those will be arriving probably a week later. At the time I placed the order we only had 120 orders in so it seemed safe to double the orders for each size. After all I wasnt sure how long the momentum was going to last.

It has lasted well enough that last night I noticed we were sold out on some sizes. I sent out a note to the supplier for another 150 or so. Hopefully he can turn that around quickly too.

The success of this has really been amazing. Thanks to all of you for ordering shirts and spreading the message, Agent b for designing the shirts and for the myspace guerilla marketing, the anonymous fan who created the original Dilla Changed My Life shirt and those who posted his pic, our t-shirt supplier Static Labs for giving special pricing because they believed in the cause, the commenter who suggested them… Wait, what am I doing? This isn’t the Oscars.

Just thanks to all of those helping us honor Dilla’s memory.

We started this project with an idea and zero budget. It’s a great feeling to know that at the end of the month we should be able to cut a check for a few thousand dollars to Mrs. Yancey.

Peace

  1. Today is my first day home for a weekend in a minute, cleaning up, chillin and dropping albums on. Listenning to Jaylib and decided I needed to handle my business. Happened to come across your site and want to pay respect, tribute, and give support.

A few generations forward we will be blessed with reincarnations of Jay.
