rappers move to lucrative book publishing world · by Rafi Kam

In the last few months we’ve seen Beanie Sigel and 50 Cent both make news when they announced they would venture into the world of book publishing.

Getting involved with the fledgling genre of “street lit” sure seems to make an appropriate business match for these rappers. But 2006 seems to be bringing a change to the game with some rappers putting their brand on non-fiction titles.

From pickin’ boogers to picking books, er.

In coming months we’ll be seeing titles like “They Caught the Vapors: How the Black Plague Nearly Destroyed Civilization” from hip-hop veteran Biz Markie’s new publishing imprint in partnership with Oxford Press. Biz, who had already transitioned in the early 90s from rapper to dj, is delighted with his new role as publishing exec and is hoping to duplicate the success of best-seller “He’s Just Not That Into You” with a twist for the fellas in the 2007 release “Just a Friend”.

Then there’s wallabee champ Ghostface Killa whose “Remember That Shit? I Know You Don’t Remember Jack” bills itself as “A Guide to Tough Love and Alzheimer’s Disease”. Ghostface is glad he can bring his usual blend of tough street wisdom and heartfelt love of family to the world in a new way. The topic hits close to home for Mr. Coles, who was able to rattle off a half-dozen aunts and uncles who had been effected by Alzheimers (and other various ailments) during his childhood. Ghostface shares with us at the book’s conclusion some mental workouts for fighting the onset of Alzheimers including reciting obscure flavors of Snapple and Nutrament.

Note: This piece was part of an April Fool’s satire.
