I was in the car two nights ago around 7pm and heard a welcome familiar sound on ESPN radio. There it was, the beat from Nas’s “Made U Look” that for about half of last year announced the openinging of Max Kellerman’s show. Before Made U Look it was Method Man’s “Bring the Pain” that served as the show’s theme. And each night after the opening minute a different banger plays in the background while Max starts the show.
A hip-hop fan through and through (and one-time fledgling rapper), Max beging Tuesday’s show with one of their most common choices “Shook Ones Pt II”. He tells his studio sidekick Gordon “You should know this by now. Whose song is this?”
Good-natured Gordon, who is assuredly not a head, remembers it’s the M-O-B-B but can’t answer which version of Shook Ones is playing. So Max turns to his young engineer who tells him with enthusiasm that it’s “Part II – the remix. With Havoc on the boards!”
Geeky white guys with as much love for hip-hop as for sports. Last year Max would often remind listeners that rap is the perfect musical form because it takes all the best parts of songs in any other genre. This type of thing might not play well in all the sports network’s affiliates across the country but here in his home market of NY it makes perfect sense.
Max whose true expertise is boxing isn’t always right on other sports. Last year he repeatedly argued that Mike Cameron is a more valuable player than Alfonso Soriano. He called Soriano’s offensive numbers a total creation of the hitter ballpark he played in. While there’s no doubt Soriano’s numbers will drop this year he is off to a tremendous start even in Washington where the large home stadium is the exact opposite of Arlington. Still Kellerman has got personality to spare and a Jewish ear for comedy, so it’s entertaining to hear him argue even when he’s wrong or whine about the particulars of his local overpriced deli.
It’s great to hear him back on the air after a long hiatus but there’s a problem. With my new living situation I’m not going to be in my car much between 7pm and 8pm on weeknights. And honestly even if I am a fan of this show, if I’m not in my car then I’m not listening to the radio.
No problem. ESPNradio.com should be on top of this right? After all most web developers know ESPN was the first major website to embrace css standards and abandon table based design… So these guys are all over the new technology, right?
No such luck. ESPNradio.com doesn’t even acknowledge Max’s existence, even after I search for my local affiliate. The separate site for the local station has no kind of archive section.
If college radio station or fundraising progressive politics type stations are already on the ball with archiving radio programs why not ESPN? The answer of course is about money. It’s not that they don’t know how to go about doing it from a tech perspective, it’s that they haven’t figured out how the money will work out with the advertising yet.
That’s a damn shame because I’m going to be missing my favorite sports show until they get this taken care of.
You can listen to Max at www.1050espnradio.com

Thanks Janay,
But you can only listen to it live – there’s no archiving of shows. It’s the time slot I have a problem with.
Other radio shows I’ve suggested in the past like Kevin Beacham’s or J-Smooth’s are archived on their stations’ websites and those are stations with far less $$$$ than ESPN.

First, I can not seem to email max Kellerman to give him my views. Do you know his email address and if so please email that to me. As far as hip-hop/ rap, as my late granfather used to say”put that GARBAGE in the GARAGE and close the door on it!! Rap/ hip-hop is an insult to the music industry as most of it denigrates women and has no business having any of their so-called musicians in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Every song has the same beat and the artists claim to fame is maiking words rhyme!! I invite anyone to dispute my opinions!!!

No thanks ERic. When you argue with an idiot you only bring yourself down to their level.
I’m surprised that ESPN doesn’t have a podcast for Kellerman. I get “Pardon the Interruption” for free on iTunes.
