Jeff Jarvis has a very thought-provoking post today which more or less says fuck the idea of professional critics.

Because the internet has turned everyone into a critic.


“If I launched Entertainment Weekly today, I hope I’d have the sense not to propose starting a magazine by hiring a bunch of critics. Oh, I might have a few of them, if they’re really worth reading. But I’d turn Entertainment Weekly into Entertainment Whenever, an online event that brings together opinions on entertainment, big and small, from anywhere, and I’d use technology to help you find the critics you trust.”

Jeff’s post is giving me some pause about whether we’ve approached album reviews, which I’ve always considered sort of the “filler section” of the site, in the right way. I mean looking past the way they’re listed which I’ve been putting off changing for a while now…

Maybe we should look instead of just chronicling albums in our spare time into a means for collecting reviews from others. Like Jarvis says in the excerpt, you can still create your own material if it’s “really worth reading” but the greatest value may be in aggregating.

Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts. You’re all critics after all.

  1. i belive more voices in the mix elevates the value of the good voices. A good critic will stand out amongst the noise.

  2. check it, if i wanna buy for instance de la’s second album or the new cube album or anything, and i don’t wanna go thru the hastle of finding someone who has heard it before, i’d check up on the internet to see if its worth my 20 bucks, butcause i cant just throw a jackson on a peice of shit, yaddidamein?

  3. My feelings are pretty much summed by Arjun too. Except I would probably end on a \”knawmean\” instead of \”yaddidamein\”, coz he obviously made that (oh) word up.

    Plus I highly rate any of your reviews—most of the albums you feature I plan to buy soon as I can get some cheddar, um, yaddidamein?
