i heard about this joint… marketing is the art of manipulation & seduction. you basically have to convince & seduce ppl into buying into what your offering through overt or covert ways.
Nah, I’ve read it. The title of the book is actually misleading.
It’s more about storytelling than lying. The argument is that people will be open to stories that fit in with their beliefs and don’t really care to hear anything else. A good storyteller is consistent and authentic. Marketers have to live their story and find an audience that want to hear that story.
So with 50 for instance a lot of people want to believe in this cartoonish idea of the super-nigga. 50 just provides them with the story they want to hear. He gives quotes as his career is starting about being just in it for the money, he lets us know he’s been shot a hundred times and it ain’t no thang, he starts beef with everyone he can, he shows off his action figure physique as often as possible and sells himself as a video game character, he ends up chilling with Paris Hilton (but who is using who for arm candy?).
Last fall when Kanye received a bunch of notoriety after his comments about Bush, 50 tells the press that he created Kanye’s success because after 50’s success people wanted something less confrontational. Never mind the fact that Kanye just confronted the president on live tv and 50 confronts people like Ja Rule.
Then he went on to defend the president with another swipe at Kanye saying New Orleans was an act of god and everyone did the best they could. “I don’t know where Kanye West’s comments were coming from.” This is a page out of Godin’s book. The country was still fairly split last year. Bush’s ratings hadn’t plunged to where they’re at now. And yeah looking at the two Americas, the ones who support Bush bought into the same story 50 is selling. One motherfucker who doesn’t give a fuck is going to do what he wants and rule the day. And the rest of the world can sit in shock and awe or hate all they want but ultimately they can’t deny they’re facing a p.i.m.p.
The book spends some time talking about how republicans used telling a story (our man will keep you safe) to win bush the re-election and how Kerry’s campaign was screwed from the start because it never bothered to tell people a story they wanted to hear.
