So I’m doing a little research for part deux of my exhaustive (in that it takes a lot of effort to write) guide to French rap and I find this song featuring Mobb Deep that dropped a few weeks ago out in Europe:
113 – School of Crime ft. Mobb Deep Edited: link fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience
I’m not saying that this is harder than anything the Mobb put out on Blood Money but…actually I am*. It’s a fairly common practice over there to buy an NYC guest spot for extra street cred, but much like Hollywood actors doing commercials in Japan, its kind of a dirty secret around here so these joints never leak out States side. As long as cats don’t recycle their verses everything should be alright though.
Hell, if the whole G-Unit thing doesn’t work out, maybe Havoc and P should consider a move to Paris: 90’s era Mobb Deep are practically worshipped over there, the dark juvenile delinquent style of their first few records serving as a model for practically every franco-rap album that’s dropped since. I’m fairly sure they could find some way to make a significant amount of paper by pimping that market, or at least as much as they’ll make once the inevitable Koch deal comes around.
Next post: something unrelated to the French.
*The joint with Mary is actually pretty tight but it’s not what I’d call “hard”.
