Today was my wife’s sister’s birthday and we went to my in-laws to celebrate with some dinner.
Now naturally being married to an Italian woman comes with its share of aggravations to deal with: the infamous fiery temper, the clogged shower drains and that whole Catholicism thing.
But a day like today makes me realize what makes it all worth while… the leftovers.
Zuppa di Pesce

Who can argue with a wide selection of shellfish in a delicious sauce served over pasta? Lobster, crab, clams, mussels, calamari, scungili (ya big scungili-head)... this dish has it all. Southern Italian seafood dishes are why Christmas Eve is this agnostic Jew’s favorite holiday. Pass the bakala.
Potato croquettes

Conceptually similar to a knish because of the mashed up potato goodness inside. But the shape and breading is more like that of a Mozzarella stick. And instead of having someone like Ruby the Knishman spread mustard on your street-cart snack, you eat croquettes as a side dish (because there’s not enough starch in the pasta). Fucking delicious by the way.
Ricotta cake

For the uninitiated, who may not have gone beyond spaghetti or lasagna, the idea of ricotta cheese for dessert may seem like an odd one. But this is the source of goodness in any cannoli and it also goes good in a cake like this one.
I didn’t have any of this cake today though because they also served a chocolate mousse cake based on those tri-color cookies. We didn’t get leftovers of that so I can’t show you a pic… Believe me when I say it was awesome.
And yes we watched the World Cup finals where Italy bested France. Viva Italia!
Clearly, a meal like that one wins my nationalistic pride.
I’ve said it before to my wife and I may say it again. When it comes to food, I’m Italian.
Rafi, you evil bastard!
I am hungry as fuck now and the only place open is White Castle.

That food looks delicious. I love my mom’s homecooked (bootleg) Italian food but pops is alergic to gluten so I rarely get it.
Rafi, I challenge you to a duel come High Holidays: pics of your fam’s best food vs. pics of my fam’s best food. I warn you, my grandma’s brisket is tasty looking.
