make them stars but forget PRs · by Rafi Kam

On June 20 the artist known as Chartreuse said to me “i explained today how to be the biggest hiphop blogger”.

This is the crux of the post he referred to and this advice isn’t just for hiphop blogging.

If you want to build the next TechCrunch of your industry, here is what you really need to do.

Pick a topic (It does not matter how crowded the market is)

Let’s use as an example something as mundane as Brick Manufacturing.

Set yourself a few alerts for news about every brick manufacture.

Grab every PR release.

And start blogging.(write about it actively and do it well (they won’t really care)

But here’s the key.

You’re not writing about bricks.

You are hardly writing about the brick industry.

You write about the people.

The presidents and vice presidents. The sales people. The drivers.

Make them stars.

The problems and controversies in brick.

Make it important.

Promote the hell out of it to brick people. They are not hiding.

In 90 days you will probably be one of the most influential people in the United States brick industry. Really.

I love it. I think this advice is totally on point. There’s just one thing I can’t get past…. It’s the “Grab every PR release” line.

I say this as someone who has been trying to grab every PR Release for the past week or so by subscribing to a few sources for hip-hop press releases. Press releases really, really suck. I mean really. They’re never about anything worth a damn. They’re written in a phony vacuous language by a bunch of phonies who are probably really a bunch of secret slobs. They’re so phony that they make my internal narrative voice get all Holden Caulfield-y. I’m not just talking about ones with lousy cliches, I’m talking about all of them. If reading these things religiously is the price of being the biggest hiphop blogger, I’m not prepared to pay.

Besides I’d rather be the best than the biggest.

  1. I just wanted to say that I am listening to the Police right now and these dudes are the greatest ska band ever.

    What were we talking about?
