another day, another dollar dead · by Rafi Kam

“Nostalgia is a symptom of amnesia”

Fletch with rap songs about being born

My RSS feeds keep dropping all these old loves in front of me:

HumanityCritic did a MySpace post which led to me seeing my old love Shortie No Mas in his top 8. And as soon as she accepts my friend request, she’ll be in mine as well. Viva Shortie No Mas!

I grew up on books by the bugged out children’s author Daniel Pinkwater and later in high school I happened to become friends with his very cool niece.

Another thing I did in high school was watch a lot of Ren and Stimpy

Speaking of old loves, Mos Def and Madlib are allegedly working on an album together. Potential for dopeness (and/or redemption) is high.

They be hatin’

Rakim Fan is trolling for comments talking smack about Ice Cube

T.A.N. expresses his post-Assimilation rage at the fact that Marriott wants to keep the Hip segregated from the Hop.

Reading is fun to Mentals

Seth Godin points out that the Long Tail isn’t just a blog and an internet buzzword, it’s also a book that hit shelves last week.

Remember that you didn’t learn about 2002’s Tipping Point until the Roots named their 2004 album after it?

Beat the rush now. It may not take 2 years for a rapper to name an album “The Long Tail”.

  3. Interviewed Shortie about a year ago for a profile in MUGSHOT. She had something on the Beatminerz comp ‘round about then. Anyway great interview she was really forthwright about the innerworkings of the Native Tongue click and its affects on her career.

  5. Ironically I had forgotten about Shortie myself until I saw her on MySpace, now I’m wondering whatever happened to that album De La Soul was supposed to produce for her. I’ll have to comfort myself in the warming embrace of Jean Grae and The Lady of Rage instead; but still, Shortie was on some shit and her album could still revolutionize hip-hop even in 2006.

  6. Hahaha, I just bought Tipping Point last week at Target. I’m reading his works in reverse order. Too broke to buy it when I originally wanted to. I heard about it from some Flash Geeks back in’02-03 who were talking online about how it was impacting the gfx they were creating for some VFX school they were attending back then. How their professor thought it was the holy yada yada for advertising and marketing glory. Then I saw dude and was like oh that’s homie from The New Yorker. Oh yeah, The Roots tried out all that music at my bar a year earlier. I’m still mad I ain’t push up on the Indian British singing chick who was rolling with them. Homegirl was feeling me…I think…haha…
