for your consideration · by Rafi Kam

Groovy?

Some thoughts based on the announcement of the 2006 Black Weblog Awards nominees.

  • For pondering… is there a gay black blogger mafia?
  • The best thing about this site is the “I love the 70s” style logo.
  • Which is dumber.. the populist notion of trusting your awards to be handled by the common people or the elitism of blaming them for your interface where rules and category definitions were not even mentioned on the “Vote!” screen (and come after it in the navigation list)?

Don’t make us think. If hundreds of your site’s users are having the same problem. It’s your fault – not theirs.
  • Are we really supposed to take you seriously when two celebrity / gossip blogs end up in the running for best hip-hop blog?

Cheers to ConcreteLoop renouncing their own nomination in that category. Now that is funny.

What do you think are the most glaring omissions from the BWA list?

Comments for "for your consideration"

  1. You make some good points—the whole “populist notion” thing though is true; we did try to make it fair by allowing everyone to nominate their favorites…hence the proliferation of nominations and finalists in certain categories. Of course, this year ended up being much worse than last year in terms of complaints about the Awards, and that’s understandable as word about the Awards gets out.

Next year, we may not make people think. Lord knows how taxing a feat that can be, even for the “common people”. Maybe we’ll just pick the sites for you. And maybe we’ll get even more complaints because people will say they’ve never heard of the blogs picked. Who knows?

But we’ll be looking forward to the other black weblog awards which will spring up after this year. We’re hoping after all the fuss made over this year’s Awards that someone puts that into action.

  2. LOL

Speaking of which, I wonder if anyone has thought about setting up a Hip-Hop Blog Awards? There’s enough of us to make that idea a reality.

  3. PS: I don’t think it’s easy to put together any type of Awards in the manner that it’ll please everyone. Granted, there are soome areas of improvement, but hats off to those guys for even trying.
