mandatory friday links post · by Rafi Kam

I have a ton of work to do but I can’t let a Friday pass without dropping some links and things.

K-Def

I’m just giving a first listen to the K-Def instrumental album Willie Boo Boo – The Fool, which I’ve seen generating some message board buzz after the Unkut post about it. And yes it is definitely worthy of the growing buzz.

Lots of hot short beats (average track length is probably even shorter than Dwight Spitz). Really a very entertaining listen, with a lot of diverse ideas. No MC required.

The 200 Greatest MP3’s of the Pitchfork list of the 200 greatest songs of the 1960s… plus ten that should have made it

I haven’t really checked out the Pitchfork list yet but I did see a good commentary from Jeff Weiss on ten songs he feels should have made the list. Check out his posts for some interesting musings on why some canonical 60s rock acts (Eric Clapton, Grateful Dead, the Kinks, the Doors) are snubbed by PF.

Ten Greatest Songs that didn’t make the list – Part 1

Ten Greatest Songs that didn’t make the list – Part 2

Meanwhile, Blogs Are For Dogs tries its best at nursing the internet from its teat by compiling MP3’s of Pitchfork’s whole list.

I never even considered clicking that link

Track? What track?

Rizoh at the Rap Up has some things to say about a Beyonce / Jay-Z track being garbage.

Honestly, clicking it never crossed my mind but holy moses at the picture that runs with the post.

You get what you pay for… or you get the same thing for less

In case you were worried about what would happen to McDonald’s profits, or if you would soon see a ban on your favorite off-the-menu sandwich, in the wake of the Ghetto Big Mac video…. worry no longer.

This article from the BBC discusses how companies ranging from Starbucks to your favorite supermarket chain keep the better deals off the menu or in very unappealing packaging. Selling high-priced crap to those who can afford it while selling the same crap at a lower price to those who can’t is all part of the equation.

The only thing your parents got right was multiculturalism

Chartreuse in his usual brilliant and arrogant manner brings a message to the youth.

An open letter to those born after 1982

I don’t know if Rodney and NovaSlim are still checking OhWord but they would be wise to check this slightly older Chartreuse post on the difference between Old and New Media…...

“Old media is begging for attention. New media is attention.”

Nobody is looking to put you on. You put yourself on.

This is what the internet as a medium has made possible. And you should enjoy it. Fucking love that shit.

And if you need advice on how to connect, it’s out there. This is a key post from CopyBlogger on the most powerful blogging technique there is.

Golden Age HipHop: The Blog

Let me put you up on this… Straight out of Oslo comes a blog that promises to keep uploading golden era rap albums for the good of humanity. Sounds like a plan I can get behind.

They launched 2 days ago and so far have uploaded for posts covering Strickly Roots – Begs no Friends, Jamal – Last Chance, No Breaks, Ras Kass – Soul On Ice, Pete Rock and CL Smooth – The Main Ingredient and Jemini the Gifted One – Scars & Pain EP.

Now you can’t say I never did nothing for you.

Why does it have to be that same old black blogspot template though? I think 30% of blogs I check look exactly the same.

But they don’t all promise me a full classic album with every post!

UPDATE: I had noticed them using an OhWord review for the Jemini EP but it didn’t bother me because they linked and gave R.H.S. the credit. But for the Strickly Roots album they used our review with R.H.S.’s text – no link, no credit. I’m going to have to holler at these guys…

Speaking of that ugly black-background blogspot template

After I linked to the Dilla shirt pic at Cigar Box Guitar I really should have linked to the other 2 posts from Fishscale Friday. At least one of them went up Saturday afternoon though! But yeah the links have probably all expired by now but you can still check the words.

the blog in which you post slow

One more blogspot template for the road.

This time it’s a white background (no pun intended) but still ugly (no pun intended). El-P is running a blog on the production of his upcoming record I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead.

How do we know he’s running it himself? The sidebar links say “Edit-Me” and today’s post titled “CLEAN YOUR SNEAKERS” appears in triplicate.

Nevertheless, I like this move. Now lets see him do something with it.

Even that coroner was a much less creepy Quincy

I really used to love that Jack Klugman show by the way.

But for now I want to talk about Quincy Jones. What’s creepier, Quincy Jones stuffing Molly Sims into his trunk or Quincy Jones stuffing himself into his 19 year old girlfriend?

  3. that goldenage hip hop blog has sharked reviews from, so far, All Music Guide, us, rapreviews.com, soundcircuit, and even 2 from Wikipedia.

So far the Double XX Posse one appears to be original. This hypothesis is supported by its opening sentence, “If rappers we’re to be metaphored through minerals, the duo Double XX Posse would most definetly be characterized as diamonds.” Definitely looks like no one else would have published that.

  4. Yeah, I sent them an email and have now posted there about it as well.

Violating the record labels is cool with me – but you don’t claim another writer’s work as your own.
