back to basics · by Rafi Kam

I’ve been listening to Diamond D’s Stunts Blunts & Hip-Hop in the car lately. Actually my wife’s independently minded car stereo held on to it and wouldn’t eject it for a while, otherwise I would have posted this yesterday.

Luckily this morning it popped right out so here’s some freshly ripped audio.

Stunts’ best known songs are the two singles that start it off – “Best Kept Secret” and “Sally’s Got a One Track Mind”. But the chilled vibe of “A Day In the Life” makes it a personal favorite.

Of course you already know “I Went For Mine” is the beat that Busta re-uses this year on “New York Shit”. I’m not breaking any news there but I just want you to listen and appreciate how SMOOTH this beat is. When the flute comes in… man, I know Michael McDonald would really be feeling it.

A Day In The Life – Diamond D with Lord Jamar and Sadat X

  4. “You Can’t Front” was Grand Puba and Sadat X. Didn’t realize the track was that old, I figured it was circa ‘95. Great song.

  7. I just noticed you guys link to our site now, good looks fellas. From the previous mentions of it here, I didn’t think you cats enjoyed it much. Even if you don’t like it, good looks on the traffic.

  8. I’m surprised… I did dis the black blogger template but otherwise I’ve linked a few times and never said anything negative. I enjoy it.

On the other hand, reading yesterday that one of you first heard of KRS-One through the Sublime song made me worry about the impact this link will have on my uh street cred.

  10. BIZARRE – I had “Red Light, Green Light” on the stereo when I saw this post. Damn, Rafi…

Production-wise, everything about “Sally” is perfect; possibly the finest example of the art of sampling in hip hop.

  11. Goddamned, I haven’t thought about Sally Got a One Track Mind in years…I gotta go dig that one up from my old tape bin…along with Positive K’s “I got a man”, plus CEB’s “The Point” which is still the jam in my book.

  12. yeaaaah, well KRS is just before my time man. and sublime was like the grateful dead of my middle school. these things just happen.

  15. Somehow this album dipped below my radar when it dropped. I loved “Sally,” but never peeped the album until the summer of 96. It pushed De La, Kast, and Jeru out of my rotation for a good while.

One of the best produced rap albums ever.

  16. You can’t front is with Lord Finesse & Sadat X, that was the b side to Fuck What You Heard actually.
