Neo Fast rap revival is dead · by Sach O

At least I can reminisce about when the movement peaked. Like last month.

Ghostface Killah – Ghost is Back

Yes fast-rap fans, it was a glorious two month movement. Sadly, all good things come to an end and I despondently have to announce that the fast-rap revival movement is no longer cool. DJs stop spinning it, hipsters stop name dropping it to emotionally unstable white girls and ironic T-shirt printers, start up your fast rap related “retro” designs. It’s time that we all start bumping some new shit, I’ve got my money on micro-house influenced techno-hop.

Why are we, the tastemakers of the internets, suddenly condemning the genre with a kiss of death (No Cash Money)? Well in our first update, we chronicled Ghostface Killah’s excellent Charlie Brown track which sparked the fast rap revival around the country. A few weeks later, The Game and his protégé Juice bravely covered Rakim’s classic Know the Ledge break in our second installment. Now however, it seems like fast rap is eating itself as Ghostface Killah is covering Know the Ledge. We here at Ohword are sticklers for originality. This kind of break re-use is totally unacceptable and due to fast rap’s sudden lack of ideas, we’d rather pull the plug on the whole thing while we still have the chance.

It’s a shame too, because by any standards Ghost straight bodies this track, aptly titled Ghost is Back. While lacking the tag-team flows exhibited by Game and Juice, the track is a success based solely on the fact that umm…it’s Ghostface. By the end of the track he’s coined a new alias (Tony Night Rider), told wack emcees that he’ll sting them like a bee, brought it to you like Verizon and gave Staten Island an appropriate old-school shout out. If anyone other than Rakim deserved a shot at bodying this break, it’s Ghost Deini.

It’s a shame that the movement had to end, but thankfully, at least it’s going out on a high note. Let’s face the facts the Fast rap revival is dead.

Time for me to cash in on the Neo Fast rap revival Revival.

  2. Damn, all the uber-cool hipsters gonna have to fall back to crack rap,
1st Nas uses the same sample on Hip Hop is Dead (but he still delivers a pretty fast, and fuckin insane rap for a man with lips that huge)
