Anyone who’s ever had the unfortunate (and most likely useless) experience of arguing with me about rap music knows that while I don’t take geographic pride seriously (kind of hard when you live where I do), I love a good old fashioned pissing contest. So in the spirit of the 20 minute photoshop job, allow me to unveil a polite, measured response to those accusing NYC of a vast conspiracy to disenfranchise the rhyme skills of southern emcees. Which is not to say I’m not looking forward to UGK’s album, but one good turn deserves another.
The worst thing about it is that I could probably make a fast buck selling some T-shirts.

for the record: i completely agree with the above image. defending the lyrical talent of most southern emcees only proves that we, the hip-hop fan, don’t know what we really like, and will constantly swallow anything deemed ‘hype’ and/or ‘original’ by the so-called tastemakers—I mean, c’mon, lil jon? on the other hand, my problem with new york is that despite all of the talented emcees in the area, jay-z is the dude who sets the bar. it’s hard to argue ‘lyrics’ when the entire population of nyc worships the ‘skill’ of an emcee who couldn’t write a grocery list (unless it was a whiney grocery list that didn’t rhyme). “who’s the best emcee? biggie, jaz-z or nas?” are you fucking kidding me? As far as emceeing goes, jay-z is not even close to being mediocre … and he’s the king of nyc!
bottom line: the emcees of the south don’t need to be hurling accusations toward a city that has been lying to itself since ‘reasonable doubt’ dropped.

As someone who often openly disagrees with the bloggers and visitors on this site, I can say that you are plain wrong. I’ve never once been made to feel unwelcome, even when I’m being an asshole.
I’ll save my lengthy Jay Z comments for the point-counterpoint, but basically, Jay Z is both vastly overrated and vastly underrated, and the two currents are related.

Jay is both overrated and underrated but has had a strong , consistent discography up until the nightmare which is Kingdom Come.
