Not quite Civil Disobedience · by Sach O

Party for your right to fight y’all.

Not that you’d have noticed with the incredible artwork, dope rapping and hilarious videos that have gone up in the past two weeks, but I haven’t been posting recently on account of some personal business, namely a grueling film shoot I was directing. Well I’m back like a rapper with a new contract and I’m here to strike fear into the hearts of sinners, suckers, wack rappers, journalists and any other douche bag that happens to make a fool of himself. My target today? The RIAA and their handling of the DJ Drama and Don Cannon fiasco of course.

Now Noz (among others) has already offered his insightful and relevant analysis of the situation and the petitions are starting up as we speak, but I thought I’d offer a more direct way for our readers to speak their mind about this shit. Now first I should point out that I’m not actually a fan of either of the incarcerated parties but I AM an established believer in an artist’s right to put out material that circumvents the established industry’s slave trade. With that said, I doubt anything the fans do or say online will amount to a hill of beans since we’re talking about the record industry’s muscle which probably already considers anyone with a computer and an internet connection to be a criminal.

So if we can’t hurt em, let’s at least piss em off.

Send your thoughts about the situation to RIAA representative and raid coordinator Mat Kilgo at MKilgo@RIAA.com. Be responsible and write a clear and concise letter making your point. Or be juvenile and call him a cocksucking pig and insinuate things about his mother. Just do whatever feels right since its obvious that the RIAA doesn’t give two shits about music, listeners and the greater good in general: they just care about their fat Mariah Carey fed pockets. I’d tell you to contact Mat’s record company overlords as well, but typically they’re too chicken shit to put their contact information up on their website. (Incidentally…would be a shame if something happened to their pretty website of theirs…not that I or anyone at Ohword advocate any criminal action nor would we take any responsibility in this matter).

So get to writing some obscene shit: it may not be productive but in the face of repression I’ve always endorsed a destructive unruly mob over the uncertain and cowardly masses. Making some noise is a long forgotten art in today’s organized and rational world and sometimes stirring some shit doesn’t hurt nearly as much as you’d think it would.

  1. Good lookin’ out to Rafi Kam and all of the other heads at Oh Word! I appreciate the love, fam. As for the RIAA and their “bust” of DJ Drama and Don Cannon, it’s all hypocritical as hell.

Record labels can put your entire career and livliehood into limbo on a whim. If they don’t want to release your album after working with you for years and hold on to your work, you can do next to nothing about it. Ask Ras Kass about how Capitol did him. If your label doesn’t promote you properly or push the right single, you can’t sue them for mismanagement, either. Drama makes COMMISIONED mixtapes that the artists themselves sign off on. Fox News is reporting half truths and nothing living up to their tags as supposed “journalists”, either. It’s all of big ass mess. One.

  3. The record labels are going to claim the artists don’t have the right to put out the music because they don’t own it, the label does, and as fucked up as that sounds it’s actually true. That’s #4080 for ya.

  6. Thanks to the Oh Word crew for the tip. I just sent an e-mail to Mr. Kilgo congratulating him and RIAA for achieving a new low point.
