Random thoughts · by Sach O

#1: It’s fucking cold out east.

•People really hate 9th Wonder and it’s hard to blame them. The guy is practically Beats by the Pound for the backpack set and at the risk of enraging a few devout No Limit/Justus League fans I can’t get down with crews composed of stereotypical emcees and producers with cheap equipment whose beats fall flat 4 out of 5 times. That said, P Body and Violent off Sean Price’s album are heat-rocks and The Way you do it is still one hell of a beat.

•Fast-Forward 10 years from now and Nas will drop a track featuring Redman, Method Man, The Lox, DMX, Ja Rule, Missy Elliot, Xzibit, Juvenile and CNN. No one will notice that Nas is actually hosting the thing. It won’t be nearly as good as the current remixes to “Where are they now” but that’s mostly because the 80’s and early 90’s emcees were better at avoiding rap-shootings.

•Will someone please give Freeway the kind of net-cred that got the Clipse a second album? I know the prospect of 50 Cent’s involvement is depressing as fuck but Philadelphia Freeway was iller than Lord Willin and I’m willing to risk a flop as long as I get SOMETHING from the man. Better yet, someone team him up with Peedi for a full album seeing as “The Prince of the Roc” isn’t exactly a Carter administration priority either.

•There is no valid reason for Scarface to be in record industry limbo. None.

El-P wants to make Neptunes beats. The Neptunes made a beat that sounds like Fantastic Damage’s “Accidents don’t happen”. Kind of funny that the opposite ends of 2002’s musical spectrum ended up doing the same shit. So who’ll remix who first?

•Cam’ron, Styles P and Fiddy arguing on Hot 97 about record industry politics? Give me one single reason why I should give a fuck because as of now, all I hear is a bunch WWE promo spots minus the promise of a decent brawl.

•Clyde Carson’s “Hood Stomped Out” gets my pick as most underrated song of the season. Cold, spacey and vaguely reminiscent of “Check out my Melody”, that beat is perfect for Carson to spit vague threats over. Don’t piss him off: he’ll crush your car roof. Or take out your projects. I guess both.

•Check out the rest of the songs on Carson’s site while you’re at it. Dude’s like 50 Cent with a better flow, an ear for beats and no watered down gun-talk. Expect a review of his group The Team’s “World Premiere” album in the next few months.

•What are you still listening to from the Christmas onslaught? Clipse, Ghost and a few Game tracks as far as I’m concerned. Jay-Z, Jeezy, Nas and Wayne/Baby would be coasters if I’d taken the time to burn them to disc.

•Attention record label and radio execs: you can do better than that stupid birthday song. Stop promoting music aimed at the mentally deficient.

•What’s with the hush-hush over Madvillainy II? Cough up some info Stones Throw.

Comments for "Random thoughts"

  1. I was traditionally pretty anti-9th, but honestly, I like his work with Sean P (and one of his beats on the BCC album). I still maintain that most of his work is boring and generic though (and Justus League’s MCs are pretty forgettable in general, only dude I like from there is Khrysis on production).

  2. please help!! i need input!!

my name is funktual & i have been sent to earth to extend the intergalactic library of hip hop songs of earth from 250 to 300. Throughout the galaxy beings love the funktual 250 list but we need more songs (50 more exactly) and need nominees. I am an audiotracker seeking nominees for the final 50 spots on the list for The 300 greatest hip hop songs ever.

please visit www.funktual.blogspot.com and post your nominees for the NEXT big intergalactic smash!

  5. for more Neptunes/El-P crossbreeding check C-Rayz Walz’s “walk through.” Shit is basically a “grinding” remix/bite

  6. Both El-P and the Neptunes make incredible beats when they’re on. El-P often drifts too far into cacophony, and the Neptunes into simplistic cookie-cutter pop, but they overlap in the middle.

El-P is at his most Neptunes-ish when he produces for Cannibal Ox; The Neptunes are at theor most El-P-ish when they produce for The Clipse.

  7. Freeway never impressed me. The devout muslim gangster who sings half the time and writes whack-ass rhymes the other half. Please, he doesn’t need a second album, he didn’t need the first album. Freeway can GO away.

  8. Writes whack-ass rhymes and didn’t need a first album? checks your review scores

“Music Vibes: 8 of 10 Lyric Vibes: 6 of 10 TOTAL Vibes: 7 of 10”

Giving it a 7/10 (which, for the record, I actually agree with, although not for the reasons you mentioned) hardly means it’s a bad album. Freeway is underrated as hell.

  9. Lyrics: 6 out of 10. I stand by what I said. Okay maybe “whack-ass rhymes” is overexaggerating because I’m feeling a bit snarky, but 6 out of 10 doesn’t mean he’s an all-time great rhyme writer. I think I probably gave Cam’Ron a 6 or a 7 at least once and he’s as doo doo dumb as they come. 6 means you’re competent enough to not fuck up a good beat. Below that the sanity of writing and flowing at all gets called into question. I’m just not feeling the need to hear another Freeway album ever again – after that first joint I was done with him other than the “Rock the Mic” remix.

  10. Errr, didn’t know that the asterisks would bold that one part, that was dumb of me.

Now that you kinda explained it, I guess I can see your point, but no love for the original “State Property”?

    Train    Feb 8, 06:01 PM
  11. Just checked the archives and I gave the original State Property straight 6’s across the board, so if anything I was feeling Free’s solo album a little more than the rest of his contemporaries. Don’t sweat the asteriks though, it’s all good.
