Q: Is hip-hop relevant to middle aged white guys?
A: Yes, if you are the middle aged white guy who covers hip-hop for the AV Club. Not so much if you are the middle aged white guy who writes about rock for the AV Club.

Dallas Penn backs Hillary in ‘08 for the best reason of all.

Bob Lefsetz drops an interesting post: a paean to Alanis, we didn’t know how good we had it then. Note the way lyrics from “You ought to know” serve as either a springboard or a metaphor for his usual topic of how the music world has imploded.

Cadence Weapon has a new video out and an album coming out on Epitaph soon. The video is great but I’m not really feeling the song so much.

20/20 Proof suggests someone update “Steady Bootleggin’” for the Internet era. Links to random video of Sean Price unable to stop laughing as he flips the table on some bootleggers in what looks like post-apocalyptic Brooklyn.

Crooklyn Classics drops this collection of rare Sean Price tracks.

Bill Cosby vs Tupac Shakur.

Hip-hop is a culture but what happens when your culture is commercial? asks Melatone Music

The Year of G Rap is going strong at Unkut.com

Keith Boykin states “Hip Hop is Quintessentially American” and lists 3 other take-aways from the Beyond Beats and Rhymes documentary.

Edan’s great 2005 album Beauty and the Beat

Just in time for the Oscars, Poisonous Paragraphs pitches the Consequence bio-pic

Steve Juon of OHHLA says Big Pun is the best to ever do it and breaks down some lyrics. Surprisingly all the excerpted lyrics look like they’re correctly transcribed. :-)

All Hip Hop has a good interview with MC Serch but I think it may be lacking a second half since they didn’t ask “The Jewish MC” any White Rapper Show questions.

Dr. Ok links to a collection of the sources from the dope, rare DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist collaboration Brainfreeze

Dork Nation stands up for Hip-Hop’s place in black history

Rob Fields smacks down one of many recent gatekeepers of blackness and champions August Wilson.

Khal drops Black History themed rap videos and a lot more in his Friday playlist.

  3. Killin’ em, Rafi!

Signing with Epitaph is a huge play for Rollie, can’t wait for Afterparty Babies. Cool video as well.

  4. I don’t care for the Onion’s music reviews in general, but I can’t stand Rabin’s reviews— Predictable as hell, no insight whatsoever.

Perhaps Cadence Weapon should dub over his videos with Ghostface songs.

I have seen a few Wilson plays recently, but will never support the sort of plays that the Times article is talking about, though I could make some serious money if I staged “A God-fearin Man is Good to Find” starring Calvin From “227,” Kirk Franklin, Al B Sure, the bald-headed broad from Total, and Debarge nem’s play cousin.

  5. Middle Aged White People usually annoy me but their irrelevance in music journalism makes them more comical than anything. Not all of them mind you, but it’s amazing how the internet-era has turned into an extinction level event for the traditional music journalist unwilling to adapt.

  6. That said, despite the asinine onion comments, Lefsetz makes a point. Too bad it’s like old fart complaining that the air used to smell better when his generation was the one that polluted it…the statement’s both obvious and the accusatory tone towards the present pointless.

  7. Man, motherfuckin’ unkut.com has been having quite the year. Like every post is amazing. Even the Joe Fatal interview!

  8. Agreed. Robbie’s been killing it for quite some time now. ‘06 was awesome too with the BDP and UMC’s stuff.

  12. I dig the link to my piece on Pun, even if it came with a joke at my website’s expense, but at the end of the day it’s all love. If you’re worried about the accuracy though Rafi hit me with that proposal – I thought you said “I’ll do it this weekend.” Hmmmmmm? :)
