OMG music blogs! · by Rafi Kam

Innocent teens don’t deserve to have their face covered with my hot didactic tirades

I got this email yesterday via the Oh Word Contact Us form.

Good afternoon. I work for a music management agency entitled ******** *****. We manage many local and upcoming bands and we are currently searching for a blog that will allow us to post updates and shows of such bands (specifically hip-hop artist *******). If this possible on your site? Or do you know any sites where this is in fact possible? Thank you for your time.

Now you all know that I can get pretty easily riled up. I think it was the end of the note in particular that bugged me, the part where she asked if I knew of any sites at all where they could get their message out. Naturally I took it upon myself to let the sender of this email know why their approach sucked and I may have gotten a little carried away.

Hi ********,

May I suggest starting a blog of your own for ******* or any of your other artists? There you can post anything you like. If you put some effort into it you may learn how this media works. You will learn that the audience does not bend to the will of the marketer. This knowledge may set you free.

I will suggest this link as your starting point: http://www.gapingvoid.com/Moveable_Type/archives/003748.html

If you have worthwhile stories or information that you think will be suited for Oh Word feel free to pass them along and we’ll decide if they are indeed something we want to share with our readers. Posting updates and shows about an artist I’m not checking is a repulsive idea to me. Perhaps you could try starting a relationship by getting me to try out the music of said artist before you ask me to shill for them.

If you are looking for just any blog that will post whatever material you send them then I think you are seeking something that will actually be of no value to you. Who would read such a blog?

I’m open to discussion on your blog strategy or anything else.

Good luck.

Regards,
Rafi Kam

There I was feeling pleased with myself for having enlightened a desperate but clueless marketer. This new world of blogging is not under your thumb, you corporate swine! Get on the Cluetrain! Markets are conversations. Blogs are about authenticity. The revolution will not be televised but you will be able to subscribe to its RSS feed.

It was about two minutes later that her reply like totally deflated my triumph.

Thanks for the email. I am merely doing what my internship is instructing me to do. I will pass the word on to send you a CD for review (you can always check out his MySpace in the meantime) and I really appreciate the advice!

Comments for "OMG music blogs!"

  1. Oy vey! Send me press releases, send me MP3s, send me audio and video links, send me CDs, send me listings for live dates… I will TRY to give you feedback on some of the stuff, but I don’t guarantee anything ( much less everything ) you send me will get mentioned on my blog. Seriously, if a PR firm or label is just looking for somebody to “let them” post their announcements they need to start their own website.

  3. It was amusing till you found out it was a poor inter! But perhaps that was a pull for sympathy so you would infact review the CD! If it is Hip-Hop related I may consider reviewing it

  4. Shay,

I have heard some older material by the (underground) artist she was citing. I think some guest spots years back.

And yeah I’d definitely give the cd a shot.

It’s all in the approach though.

  5. Hey, if her internship is instructing her to do something stupid, she should be made aware of it (if she isn’t already). I don’t think you were out of line.

  6. R-Lex,

    In full agreement here.

Her “I’m just an intern following orders!” response was funny to me for a few reasons.

First of all it only adds to the poor way this company is representing themselves.

I spent a few paragraphs trying to get this person to reconsider their approach on how to reach out to bloggers and their response amounted to “I just work here buddy”.

I love that she also interpreted my message as meaning that I particularly want to hear the cd (but doesn’t ask for my address) or visit the artist’s MySpace page (no url provided). This is the person I was trying to school.

All good though. Maybe she learned something and either way at least I got a blog post out of it.

  7. i get emails like this from time to time. or offers on paying for blog content. i usually just forward them my form mail for a banner ad. to which they rarely follow up on.

it makes me wonder who if any bloggers are actually partaking in these practices.

  8. “i usually just forward them my form mail for a banner ad.”

    That’s the right response.

Or do like me – offer to consult for them.

  9. Clearly this was brilliant viral marketing, because you were fooled into turning Oh Word readers on to the talent of mc *******

Who’s the one who got played now, Rafi?

  11. Your response was on point and justified, but this is just golden:

“I am merely doing what my internship is instructing me to do”

    Wow. Too funny.

  15. You guys are missing out. I accepted the offer behind Rafi’s back and now I’m riding a Cadillac on 22’s while sipping Patron out of my diamond incrusted pimp cup to the delight of my multi-racial array of video girls.

  16. Frankly I don’t mind posting the press releases on my newsfeed if they’re relevant to a hip-hop audience. The ones that really bug me are the e-mails for a live show featuring Portland’s favorite DJ such-and-such on Saturday night. If you’re not living in Portland, who the fuck cares?
