Ian takes his first pitcher in closer J.J. Putz. He will not take his first SP until round 14.
When Pierzynski and Eckstein go back to back in round 8, I start to get this queasy feeling like when you’re a kid and you suddenly realize it’s wrong to torture defenseless animals.
Ron Mexico takes Papelbon for his #2 starter (behind Kazmir) but after today’s surprise announcement by the Red Sox, it seems Papelbon will actually be his #2 closer (behind Nathan).
I really don’t like Gordon or Jenks for this year. Angry Citizen would have been wise to get Jenks backup Macdougal late in the draft.

big brother takes my planned next pick in Howie Kendrick. With Barfield and Kinsler going, the 2b options are coming off the board but there are actually plenty of decent cheap sleeper options at this position.
Rounds after the Dontrelle pick, Dallas gets his real ace in Barry Zito. Expect a surge in numbers from the league change.
I decide it’s high time I picked up my first closer and take Brad Lidge.
Jason Schmidt could be a fine pick in the 9th but I agree with whoever it was in the draft that said “fuck Jason Schmidt”. He’s one I avoid.

Ian completes his potent outfield with Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer could approximate Hideki Matsui numbers but for the uncertainy he goes much later in the draft.
I take Rich Hill for a #4 starter with a ton of upside. I don’t want to blow having 3 great SP’s so I get a potentially great #4 too.
As in Round 8 I like the last closer taken in Round 10 (Saito) better than I do the two before him (Ray and Fuentes).
Dallas takes Pedro. Unfortunately Pedro will be out half the year. It’s becoming clear now that Dallas is drafting based on charisma, grit, hustle, likeability.
I can’t really fault him for that. I used to make roto decisions almost solely on player names and photos. And I still won some leagues that way.
I think Schilling stays mostly healthy and puts in work in 07 so he’s a nice pick here.

I like Bush and Burnett. Really low K guys like Wang are fantasy poison to me.
A little 2b run takes place with Kent, Giles and Cantu.
It occurs to me that Ryan Freel is still on the board – 2b eligibility and a good bet for 40sb’s. Two things I need.
I also need more closers, a shortsop and a catcher. And I kind of want Willy Taveras…. And I’m also thinking, when do I pull the trigger on Teahen.
But it’s clear to me that a 2b with 40 sb’s takes precedence over anyone else I can get so I go with Freel.

I take Valverde for my 2nd closer. I’m hoping at this point that Dotel makes it back to me.
There’s not much left for shortstops on the board. Orlando Cabrera is still out there though. If I don’t get him I’ll just spend a last round pick on a Rich Aurilia or Wilson Betemit or Khalil Greene. The margin of difference between these guys is not huge. So I’m not ready to spend a pick on Cabrera yet.
Arroyo and Capuano are nice picks here in the 12th. Clemens will be great for a half-season, Rivera may be great for a half-season too but it’s too early to pick him.
Dotel will outpitch Borowski but Borowski is a better bet for saves.

Expect very good things from Pettitte and Patterson if they stay healthy. Big if.
Mark Teahen in the 13th round is a steal. I have little doubt that this guy will be a top 50 player at the end of the year.
I already have Miguel Cabrera and Garrett Atkins at 3b but Teahen will be OF eligible soon.
I like Bonds and Olsen here too.

Derek Lowe FTW. I like Lowe – I have him as a #5 in another league. But still it’s funny. I’m curious to see how it works out for him.
I take Armando and I feel a definite shame doing so. Dotel is gone and so I basically take anybody that happens to be closing. It feels so wrong. I probably could have done better on that pick.
I expect good things from Garcia. Millwood is still a very good pitcher – on the road. I wouldn’t start him at home. One of these years Vazquez will deliver on his potential. Because of his low cost, he’s worth betting on.
Otsuka is Gagne’s back-up in Texas. As such this is a high pick for him. It’s debatable whether he should even be owned given we only have 5 bench spots.

What’s not to like about Snell and Escobar. They will give better value than quite a few pitchers who were taken before them.

Martin has a little pop and some wheels and he makes contact. There is little not to like, especially getting him after so many other catchers are off the board.

I had indeed just joined the draft at that point. I raced home as fast as I could, ran a few people over, knocked over a little kid running up my apt. stairs, logged onto Yahoo as fast as I could, and picked freagin Liriano. Good job.
I’m just happy I got an honorable mention for my only real pick – Conor Jackson. A solid 20th round pick – I can see him hitting a grand slam, giving me the lead in Sept. leaving Rafi wondering why he spent all those sleepless nights adjusting his roster.

I timed out on that Kerry Wood pick and Yahoo gave him to me automatic stylee.
I picked Pedro to rock my bench. I didn’t think I would have Wood there as well.
It’s a long season and I haven’t even done any homework yet.
I’ve only heard about your BMFOAT skills in role playing games, let’s see what kind of wood the Rafinator really bats with.

Great write-ups Rafi. Definitely enjoyable for the 14 of us I’m sure.
You really let me have it for that Otsuka pick up, though. Let us not forget, Gagne has pitched 15 innings (15 INNINGS!) the past two seasons, and Otsuka was an effective closer in a hitter’s ballpark. I see no reason to assume that Gagne is either succesful or healthy for more than half the season. Too early, perhaps, but he should definitely be drafted in our league setup, especially when Broxton, Wheeler, Zumaya, Meredith and other set-up men were taken.
And it was me that said fuck Jason Schmidt. I stand by that shit too, fuckin Benedict Arnold goin from the Giants to the Dodgers.

With Gagne starting off the year hurt, I will have to eat crow about my Otsuka comment.
I still think you could have nabbed him several rounds later but he’ll obviously be of immediate value to you.
