Rap songs to get bent and punch a wall to · by Sach O

I can say without a doubt that Hip hop is the single best style of music to get shit-faced to. Country is for hicks, rock hasn’t been appropriate since glam fucked up the machismo and unless you’re over 40, sitting around listening to old soul records isn’t mysterious it’s nerdy. Rap meanwhile has an almost unlimited selection of jams that inspire anger and depression without coming off as hopelessly emotional and bitch made. With this in mind, here’s my suggested soundtrack for the night you’ve had one too many and have taken the unwise decision of burning down your boss/ex/neighbor’s house.

“I’m mad as fuck and I’m not gonna take it anymore!”
1) M.O.P – Way of the World
The great thing about M.O.P is that they have one single setting: angry. When your whole steez is built around yelling, more yelling and yelling clever punchlines over boom-bap you’re bound to have a nervous breakdown on wax sooner or later. Enter Way of the World, the moment that Fame and Billy slump down on the project steps with a forty ounce and sing growl the blues. A mix of absolute defiance, paranoid hatred and utter frustration with the world around them, the song is so angry it’s exhausting. Just bump this for an hour after a couple of rounds and you’ll be too tired to do anything you might regret in the A.M.

“Fuck all y’all”
2) Mobb Deep – Dealt with the Bullshit
If you’re not in the mood to get yelled at by Brooklynites, try chemical depression with QB killers. Critics are going nuts over how nihilistic Prodigy sounds on his (excellent) Return of the Mac tape, but where were they when the original HNIC dropped with Mobb Moments like this? Over Havoc’s spaced out creeper, the duo reminisce on tough times, sneering and quietly threatening to end it for all involved. Put this on after a night of serious thinking/drinking: the walk home from the bar will never sound so dope.

“You’re all a bunch of fuckin morons!”
3) Ras Kass – Ordo Ab Chao
Ras Kass is a known alcoholic and not the jovial kind that hangs out with King Tee: the kind that gets stuck with career ruining DUI’s and signs contracts so bad that most bums would turn them down. Additionally, he’s an educated motherfucker which means that he has an acute understanding how fucked up this world is and how much scotch is necessary to dull the pain. Ordo Ab Chao sums up the misanthropy, conspiracy theories and ego tripping that made Soul On Ice so great. It’s everyone else’s fault and that’s the undisputed truth dammit. Now someone take his car keys.

“Fuck my life!”
4) Common – The Book of Life
I was going to mention Nas’ Drunk By Myself but that shit’s too obvious and frankly, who the hell wants to hear some rapper nagging them when they’re getting their drink on? I’d rather hear from Resurrection era Common, a literate drunk in the finest sense. The Book of Life sounds like it was written, recorded and mixed drunk with Common stumbling over his words, crumbling under the pressure of a life gone wrong and generally acting like a washed up old drunk with all the melodrama and pathos of seemingly failed recording artist his mid 20’s. Sadly he’d go on to design his very own line of hats.

“Drinking song to straight kick someone’s ass to”
5) Beanie Sigel ft. Peedi Crack – Flatline
Instructions: Drink some tall cans. Not enough to pass out or nothing, just enough to get surly. Put this song on. Look for someone to sucker punch. Jump the kid. Repeat. For a fun diversion, replace alcohol with any number of drugs.

  3. I would have never picked “The Book of Life,” but listening to it in this context it makes perfect sense. Great list, Sach…

  4. The one track you missed is ‘We Got Gunz’ by Gangstarr, MOP and a surprisingly good Fat Joe off The Ownerz joint by Gangstarr. The Premo beat and the agressive content make this a good’un to kick some ass and take some names to.

  8. “Bring It On” by OK has always been my go-to-in-a-frustrated-mood song. It’s made many appearances after (SF) Giants games in fact. Aside from the obviously perfect hook, Pharoahe sounds like he’s giving this wrathful drug-induced sermon. I like that.

  9. Eric Sermon-“hostile”

I think i could cannibalize a live human while listening to Keith Murrays verse. I really do.

  10. GZA & company—4th Chamber
    Monch/MOP—No Mercy
    half of G Rap—4-5-6
    OC—Jewelz
The 1st song from Dah Shinin
El-P—The Nang after the beat change or Co Flow—Last Good Sleep.

Redman, The Liks, Geto Boys/Face, and Mobb Deep have many.
