Behind the Music: Rakim - Shades of Black · by Rafi Kam

R.H.S. dug up the Rakim track “Shades of Black“ as part of the 50 Incredible Rap Songs You Need to Hear Now feature we ran in February.

Larry Robinson is the head of the independent, Los Angeles based Avatar Records that put out “Shades of Black” and he was nice enough to share with us the story behind the making of the song in this podcast he sent in last night.

The story runs quite long (could have probably been a 10 minute mp3 instead of 20) but it’s still a cool listen and allows us to hear what it was like to work with a hip-hop legend.

Lessons taught here include:

..How to get Rakim to show up to the studio (send a limo)

..How the god can craft an ill song while he appears to just be partying

..The best method for handling contract negotiations circa 1995 (demand to see Tupac’s contract).

So thanks to Larry Robinson and check out his Flava Podcast on the making of Rakim’s “Shades of Black”.

By the way it opens with a clip of the song so don’t think you clicked on the wrong mp3 file.
