You know shit’s fucked up when... · by Sach O

Also, vote in Sarajevo.

…You throw on Diplomatic Immunity and actually get nostalgic for that sound. “Straight Out the Jungle”, “Street Level” or even “The War Report” sure…but when did cheap chipmunk soul fall off the face of the earth?

UGK outflows Andre 3000. I guess I’m in the minority on this one but I haven’t flipped out over Dre’s performance on International Players Anthem. His awkward over pronunciation worked fine on Devin’s joint but it’s just Waynish here. Plus Bun B and Pimp C murder that sample as it should. Still, Cormega somehow managed to outpimp the masters.

…El-P gets better promotion than Redman. Granted, Reggie Noble is considered purely vestigial around the Def Jam offices whereas El-P gets the indie Jigga treatment, but unless you’re a superstar the gap between Indie and Major has never been so small.

…You actually start believing Prodigy’s boasts in 2007. Not literally of course, but no one’s snickering or thinking about how big Jay’s money stacks are anymore. It’s amazing what a couple of looped records and an utter disdain for the world can do for your career.

The New York Times compares Timbaland to James Brown and describes Kanye West’s rapping as “brilliant” while Dr Dre’s is simply “effective”.

Rock the Bells Tickets sell out in less than a day (plus presales). I got mine and will be reporting from the ground with approximately 5 kajillion other blogs. My coverage will have snark and humor; theirs will have backstage photos with Vinnie Paz.

…you’ve got Mims’ chorus stuck in your head. Don’t front, it happens to the best of us. Still, a step down from Laffy Taffy is pretty damn low.

…there’s so little news that Ohword goes into hibernation. We’re not lazy, we just don’t give a fuck about Rick Boy or Paul Wall. Or Patrick Wolf and Joss Stone for that matter.

…Devin the Dude, Prodigy, El-P, Sean Price, Ultimate Force, Brother Ali and Da Bidness all drop albums and bloggers are calling this the worst year in Hip Hop history. I’d check for Alzheimer’s guys, this time last year we had Ghostface and an instrumental Dilla album that got half of its rotation on sympathy alone.

Women are smacking rappers. Rappers are smacking children and children aren’t buying records.

  3. 1.) You’re wrong about the Dre/UGK. That Dre verse is one of his best.

2.) It’s messed up, but Red wasn’t going to do great numbers anyway. El-P has a strong following of Def Jux groupies and hipsters and can trade on his image as a boundary-pushing, “intelligent” artist. Why would the mainstream press even care about Red?

3.) Dr. Dre merely “effective”? Recently, I think Breihan even said that Dre can’t rap at all and put him in the same category as Timbaland the rapper. It just reinforces my point that mainstream music writers are clueless about what makes a good rap vocalist—that’s why they hype so many rappers with terrible voices and wack flows.

agreed. how many “hip-hop heads” knew who jay dee was before his death??

it’s also amazing to see how no one is talking about James Brown’s legacy (who?) while everybody is wearing their “dilla lives” limited edition t-shirts.

  6. For what it’s worth, I showed the same love to El-P as to Redman – they both got a featured review on RR, but El-P got all the free promotion from [adult swim] while Def Jam hasn’t lifted a single finger to help Reggie Noble. I got more than a few e-mails from people agog when they saw the review, totally unaware he would even have a new album in stores.

Geez… I read that too. Hilarious.

  8. Although Mega MIGHT (notice I said might, I know it’s unfathomable for me to suggest the superiority of a Texas rapper over a Queensbridge one) be better than Bun B lyrically, he seriously is not fucking with anyone on that song in terms of flow or charisma. That’s the one thing that’s always held me back from ever fully liking a Mega album. Andre didn’t really even rap over that shit. Good verse, but there wasn’t no beat under it, so it’s cheating. Heehee. Just kidding. It’s good to see he’s off the sing-songy shit.
