an idea best left in the chat room: billy joel vs bdp · by Rafi Kam

take ‘em to the bridge piano man

R.H.S.: are you familiar with the Ed OG song featuring Def Jef called “Speak Upon It”?
R.H.S.: i’ll upload it later tonight if not
R.H.S.: they rock a sample of “walk on by” (different from the black steel in the hour…” one) and quite wonderfully kick some protest raps
R.H.S.: when it comes to songs like that
R.H.S.: i do feel where some of these rap bashers are coming from
R.H.S.: in that there isn’t even a trace of productive, insightful rebellion on wax anymore
R.H.S.: in other news, it is just me or has been a really long time since Ghostface really FLOORED me with a great record
rafi: let us not forget the word of billy joel
rafi: who said
rafi: “the good old days weren’t all that good and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems”
R.H.S.: well sure
R.H.S.: damn that billy joel and his likable pithyness
R.H.S.: always putting things into mature and poetic perspective
rafi: he said that while driving his porche into a 2 bedroom massapequa home
rafi: porsche even
R.H.S.: yeah but i’m ok with that
rafi: ghostface? yeah shouldnt he have another 2 albums out by now
R.H.S.: because billy joel apparently in his day had some big cajones and revived his music career after being completely fucked by the industry
R.H.S.: plus he flipped raw styles
rafi: really? i was not aware of that
R.H.S.: Heart Attack-ack-ack-ack-ack
R.H.S.: that’s pre-Big Pun, dunny
rafi: begin, reagan, palestine
rafi: terror on the airline
R.H.S.: also he was dissing bitches with fake hair and eyes mad long ago
rafi: jfk blown away… he shouldnt have gone there
rafi: started violence in rap music
R.H.S.: lol i might have to discuss billy joel for the brand nubian piece
R.H.S.: also he inspired portions of one of the greatest rap disses ever
rafi: yup
R.H.S.: and he understands the pitfalls of northern new jersey real estate
R.H.S.: which should make him relatable to jay-z and nas
R.H.S.: ::zing::
rafi: gza wishes he could tell a story like the tale of brenda and eddie
R.H.S.: have you ever seen billy joel live?
rafi: no
R.H.S.: he’s pretty flawless
rafi: but i did rock one of his concert t-shirts for a while
R.H.S.: consummate professional
rafi: from the bridge tour
rafi: when i was 12
rafi: my sister had seen him and got me the shirt
R.H.S.: i’m surprised he never really tried doing hiphop
R.H.S.: i mean he rapped on we didn’t start the fire
R.H.S.: but it’s no rap song
rafi: i ended up selling it after wearing it for a year to my friend’s kid brother who was obsessed with billy
rafi: i think it had a hole in the side by then
R.H.S.: this convo is taking on the flavor of a ghostface skit
rafi: it’s funny that he had a tour and an album called the bridge
rafi: considering the bdp interpolation
rafi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_%28Billy_Joel_album%29
rafi: we should assert that this is a response album
rafi: that billy joel perceived krs’s use of his song to be a dis against him
R.H.S.: billy joel’s the bridge album is from 1986
R.H.S.: !
R.H.S.: actually this is kind of funny
R.H.S.: if we can get brian to photoshop joel and shan together
R.H.S.: The final song recorded for the album was “Code Of Silence.” Cyndi Lauper contributing backing vocals on “Code of Silence” and garnered the only co-writing credit of Joel’s entire career for helping him with the lyrics to the song.
R.H.S.: ^like a reverse roxanne shante situation
rafi: as a long island boy billy allied himself with nearby queens over the bronx
R.H.S.: actually it might be funnier if…
R.H.S.: instead of a fake account
R.H.S.: a fake first-person letter
R.H.S.: from billy joel to krs
rafi: should billy be an unnamed member of the juice crew?
R.H.S.: he could claim it
R.H.S.: in an attempt to be hard
R.H.S.: kind of like his claims of walking through bed stuy on “you may be right”
rafi: did you see krs interviewed by hannity?
R.H.S.: no
rafi: mr. parker you say in “seventy-six to 1980, the dreads in brooklyn was [sic] crazy.” but what do you know about brooklyn in those days? in 1980, while you were sleeping at the central park zoo, i took “You May Be Right” to #7 on the Billboard charts. Maybe you don’t remember when I detailed how “I’ve been stranded in the combat zone, I walked through Bedford Stuy alone”. I didn’t see you or any of the BDP posse then and in hindsight the dreads were quite decent to me.
R.H.S.: also, he should state that BDP’s labelmates JVC Force consider him to be a legitimate Strong Island representative

  1. More than anything, I’m impressed with the depth of each of your knowledge of th Billy Joel catalog. Shit’s comedy. Nice one.

  2. Funny shit. There was an article in a UK zine some years ago where the Beastie Boys claimed Joel to be the unofficial 4th Beastie.

  3. This made me smile.

But, re: Ghost, I couldn’t tell whether you meant “record” to mean “album” or “song.”
