agent b gets busy with an art blog · by Rafi Kam

agent b, who does all the art around here, has started up an incredible art blog which currently resides on his MySpace page.

b has gone in something serious with a post every weekday since last Monday. These posts offer a behind the scenes look at his work and even some DIY suggestions.

b is doing nearly everything right. He’s giving readers who want to try out their own art projects inspiration and resourceful tips. The very act of teaching elevates him from expert to guru and reminds me of the advice of Copyblogger, don’t sell – teach!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that agent b has a ton of marketing savvy given that the guy referred to his Blue Ocean strategy when discussing his recent WiiMix project.

Also his whole faceless existence (basically nobody knows what agent b looks like, I’ve been his friend and collaborator for years and have never as much as spoken to him on the phone) and amazing ideas and artwork can be filed as an example of Seth Godin’s mantra “be remarkable”.

Since starting the MySpace art blog, the freelance illustrator has received daily solicitations from people who want to buy work or contract his services.

So if you’re an artist, can blogging help your career? Yes, a great deal if you do it right. That means be dope in the first place and then let people in to your world in a way that they’ll find interesting and relevant to them.

Expect the blog to move off MySpace in the near future but in the meantime check it out there.

Here are the agent b art blog posts so far:

how to paint without brushes
“brushes are a hassle.” An easy to follow tutorial with plenty of photos where b shows how he creates his trademark funky backgrounds with a metro-card instead of a paintbrush.

paying tribute to a donut chef
Step-by-step instructions explain how b created the design for the Rest In Peace Jay-Dee shirt that we were selling last year.

yeah, i fucks with your type
Great post. Here we see how to use an exacto knife and some elbow grease to mess with your fonts for a less clean style. Also, an upcoming Athena / ROBOTOBOTS song is teased.

building tiny vinyl skylines
Make your own Savior City.

Wu-Tang VS. Peanuts…they need your help
The evolution of Raekwon as Charlie Brown. This post ends with all the tools you need to make your own Wu-Peanuts strips. Try it!

sketches – from concept to completion
A paean to drawing by hand which you are urged to do even if you think you suck.

REJECTED
Even with a ton of talent, some of your stuff isn’t going to work out. Here b looks at a bunch of his own misfires and talks about where he went wrong. Post ends with a how-to for the Lil’ Wayne Jim Morrison art from yesterday.

  3. I remember a time when OHWORD brought classic posts just like agent b has doing. These days we get uninspired bloggers making uninsipired posts about uninspiring rappers.

Bring back the golden age of rap blogging!

Teach! We want features! We want reviews! We want more agent b art!
