DOORS OPEN AT 12:00PM

I’m supposed to be going to the Sunday show so lets look at my lineup and whether I should be at the main stage or the “Paid Dues” second-stage.

12:10 – 12:40 (assuming I make it to the show on time) David Banner vs Lucky I Am.
I don’t know who Lucky I Am is whereas David Banner is a fucking Katrina superhero. Vote: Banner.

12:40 – 1:10 Jedi Mind Tricks vs Blueprint
How did they decide who would be on the main stage here? Coin toss? Hmm, I think this will be a good time to get some beer or drop that deuce.

1:10 – 1:40 Boot Camp Click vs Hangar 18
Sorry Alaska. Tough break for you. Vote: BCC!

1:40 – 2:15 Immortal Technique vs Grouch & Eligh
Never seen either act live but I gotta go with Felipe on the strength of knowing him when he was a mild-mannered kid at the same nerdy high school as me.

2:20 – 2:50 Pharoahe Monch vs Mr. Lif
I saw Monch on the first Spitkicker tour. It was all right but not that special. Maybe I’ll give Lif a shot. On the other hand it’s Monch and I’m not up on Lif’s post I Phantom material…. Hmm. Vote: Toss-up.

3:00 – 5:00 Mos Def & Talib Kweli set, followed by Rakim set vs. Cage set / Brother Ali set / Sage Francis set
What’s up? I thought segregation was a thing of the past! You know I wouldn’t have minded checking out these white boy’s sets but I can’t pass on reunited Black Star followed by Rakim. A little part of me is tempted to shoot interviews with the crowd that chooses to see Sage Francis over Rakim. Despite the high comedic potential there I don’t see missing Rakim to carry that one out. Vote: Always bet on black.

5:05 – 6:00 Erykah Badu vs Felt
Finally, a clear win for the Paid Dues stage! I’m not particularly a fan of Felt (a group comprising of Slug and Murs) but I bet they’ll do a lively set and I want to stay as far from Badu’s radioactive punani as possible. Plus the freaky teen girls with self-esteem issues will be watching Felt. And I will be felt watching them. Er…

6:05 – 7ish Public Enemy vs Living Legends
No disrespect to Living Legends but I’ve got to get with the real living legends here. Wondering what kind of crowd Living Legends will be playing to here in New York against P.E. Only the staunchest anti-nostalgists I’d imagine.

7:05 – 7:30 First half of Cypress Hill set vs end of Living Legends set
I’ll see the start of Cypress Hill’s set and probably feel a certain deja vu seeing as I booked early out of a Cypress Hill set on that very same stage at Lollapalooza in 1995. That time it was to go see a ridiculously on-point Redman on the second stage. This time it will be to see….

7:30-8ish Cypress Hill vs Doom
Having never seen MF live I’m pretty excited about this one… it sucks that the last half of his set is up against Wu-Tang though.

8-9 – Wu-Tang Clan vs last half of Doom
Sorry Dumile. The Wu is coming through and the outcome is critical. Sure, they’ll probably be late but I don’t think I’ll risk missing a minute.

9:30 – 11 Rage Against the Machine vs second stage being put away
Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!

I wonder how many rock kids are gonna be coming through just for the last act. I’ll try and land some elbows and get muddy and what-not in the last hour.

Last I checked VIP tickets were still available for Saturday and General Admission ones for Sunday.

Who else is going on Saturday or Sunday?

  6. A few completly irrelevant observations seeing as how I will pretty much be working straight from Friday through Sunday. But for the benefit of those who havent seen many of these acts before:

As we should all know by now Great rappers do not always equal great rap performances. Believe it or not, a few months ago in Philly Cypress Hill threw down one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen behind Busta. (B Real plays the drums and I think Sen Dog in Spanish is better live than 80% of working rappers live in English) Monch’s energy and set list crushed both Mos & Talibs when I saw them all together last year in DC and Jean Grae was probably better than Monch. As an old school enthusiast who loves freestyle and battle rap mixed in with his politics, I cant imagine Immortal putting on a bad show. However, though Im a staunch supporter I cant help but feel something will be lost in translation for Doom. Whoever evaluated the importance of these acts and decided Banner should open should be shot, enjoy the show you lucky bitches.

  7. Monch’s Highline Ballroom show was straight fire. My decision to see him will depend on whether or not he’s got the Band and backup singers with him.

Also, it looks like Sunday has the better lineup. I’ll take Rakim/Blackstar over Roots/EPMD anyday.

  8. Sunday is definitely the better lineup. No Doom on Saturday either.

I’m geeked to see Rakim and P.E.

  9. Ima be there Sunday and Ima tell you one thing; check for Monch. I saw him a few weeks back and he fucking wrecked it. I mean he wrecked it bad. I aint even survive the show (I aint getting into details but lets jus say sometimes u gota clip it). Ima totally be there when Monch does his thing.

  10. You missed to mention the love that the crowd showed to Felipe. Even La Rocha dedicated to IT a whole song. It would have been an honor to me to have known IT in school
