Most humans only use 10% of their brains. With You Already Know What It Is we are daring to use an extra 2-3% by assessing music without hearing it.
In a way, you could say this makes us 20-30% better than you.
On to this week’s reviews. Last week’s “Raekwon presents… Icewater” ushered in a strange trend of “x presents y” albums this week. Homoerotic album covers were big this week, as were live albums or DVD’s by old acts that nobody cares about anymore (Black Crowes, Dave Matthews Band, Megadeth, Yes). We at least spare you that 7th generation classic rock crap… Get ready for the rest of this week.
Devin the Dude presents… Coughee Brothaz – Waitin’ Our Turn
In a subtly evocative move, Devin’s weed carriers portray themselves on their album cover as … Devin’s Weed Carriers.

Ice Cube – In the Movies
Aside from the obvious fellatio imagery of the cover, this album would only be worth buying if Cube had kept his Higher Learning soundtrack style where he raps the plot of the movie you just watched. Sure he didn’t invent this style – Bobby Brown’s Ghostbusters 2 rap immediately springs to mind as an earlier example. But Cube perfected it and who wouldn’t want to hear rap songs describing the narrative of “Are We There Yet?” or “The Glass Shield”.

Lords of the Underground – Still L.O.T.U.G. (DVD)
Still Languishing in Obscurity Toiling at Understaffed Gas stations
- RHS
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (40th Anniversary Edition) – Pink Floyd
Featuring liner notes by Lupe Fiasco.
- Sach
Southside Soldiers – Street Legends
Apparently as long as you have ms paint and a microphone you can have a rap album too!
- Arlene
A Place for Us: A Tribute to 50 Years of West Side Story
Sure it’s an album about effeminate gang members coming up with dance routines, but where’s the Lil Wayne verse?
- Sach
Drag-on – Hood Environment
With his 4th goddamn album the man proves that his career – like his name – will drag on. Stay dead already!
- Rafi
I would rather watch Sisqo shit into a bucket than listen to this.
- Arlene
Mister D Presents – 113% Gangster Music Volume 2
This weeks releases make me want to quit listening to rap forever.
- Arlene
At least the album cover is slightly less suggestive of prison rape than Volume 1
- Rafi
Cuete Presents… Round Towne Music
Every Cuete with a booty bought a Coogi
- Rafi
OK seriously I’m getting mad. I work near that Redondo Beach sign so prominently featured on this album cover. It is neither gangster nor anything that should influence you to create a gangster rap cd. “Like A Cholo” is more believable than this.
- Arlene
Roll Deep Presents Grimey Vol 1.
If only Grimey rolled deep enough to include someone with a shred of talent at graphic design in his extended mosse.
- RHS
Bam Margera Presents: Viva La Bands, Vol. 2
Kind of like a DJ Khaled mixtape for trailer trash.
- Sach
Charon Don and DJ Huggy – Hands Down
Hands down, the gayest album since Me Phi Me’s Remixes and Rarities.
- RHS
Isaac Hayes: Live at Montreux 2005 by Isaac Hayes (DVD – 2007)
Was this shot before or after he contacted the Mothership-8 using televentriopic prestidigitation as instructed by the green orb of falcorton?

RE: Ice Cube: Let us not forget the end credits for Rappin’ where Mario Van Peebles and co. rap the entire plot of the movie and even provide some epilogue.
— Reggie Sep 6, 02:43 PM
Damn. I’d rather get a colonoscopy than listen to any of this shit (except the Devin weed carriers glorified rerelease of last years mixtape… which is pretty good).
— B. Ware tha Siniq Sep 6, 02:58 PM
I agree, colonoscopies are awesome.
Especially the end part where you feel the camera being pulled out.
Theseus finding his way out of the Labyrinth by following the Golden Thread.
— rafi Sep 6, 03:07 PM
good call reggie.
i spend too much time trying to forget mario van peebles usually but that is something to remember.
— rafi Sep 6, 03:09 PM
Yeah this is a pretty weak list of albums this week; I’d rather not hear that Cube cd because his recent movies have been horrible.
And the cholo rap genre is about as bad as crunk or snap; 97% of the rappers are garbage
— E aka Fidel Cashflow Sep 6, 04:06 PM
The Devin weed carriers and the Charon Don weren’t too bad, and “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is a goddamn classic, naturally. Lord knows I wouldn’t peep anything else on this list though.
— Train Sep 6, 06:13 PM
shit, this post proves how hard it is to be funny without sounding like a hack.
reminds me of those SNL skits that go on too long — shit’s lazy.
— ... Sep 6, 06:44 PM
Holy Me phi Me reference!
— dante severe Sep 6, 07:35 PM
Oh Word’s tagline should be:
We prefer to be the 4081st blog that shits on wack albums & cries that hiphop is dead, then 1 of the few blogs that discover & highlight good new hip hop.
— NoMamesBuey Sep 7, 02:04 AM
fwd, Ohword, you could’ve been a site like WTF, that bigs up new albums & classic albums
http://whentheyreminisce.blogspot.com/
Coulda woulda shoulda.
— NoMamesBuey Sep 7, 02:06 AM
Why do we need to be like that site if that site already exists?
Here is a post from yesterday that big upped an album:
Lord Willin
Here is a different post from last week that challenged the notion that hip-hop is anywhere near dead.
I didn’t see you comment on either of those.
Suck it.
— Rafi Sep 7, 02:21 AM
“Suck it.”
It’s inevitable that someone will soon comment “You mad, doggie?”, so allow me.
— Robbie Sep 7, 07:26 AM
if you guys diss Graduation next week i might just have to cry
— T.R.E.Y. Sep 7, 10:33 PM
I actually thought some of these albums were a clever agent b parody until I clicked on them (Ice Cube and “113%” in particular).
