Monica “Before You Walk Out Of My Life” (Pete Rock remix)
The Chocolate Boy Wonder’s lifesaving remix treatment + nubile native Atlantean bourgeois sangin’ = bliss. Live for ’95.

Monifah – “Have You Ever Been Loved?”
The bad girl with an angelic voice hypnotizes over a hard funky beat. From her largely overlooked 1996 sophomore LP, Mo’Hogany. If it sounds only vaguely familiar, it’s because a decidedly softened-with-age NYC rapper sampled it.

Adriana Evans – “Reality”
She’s the daughter of the celebrated jazz vocalist Mary Stallings, the goddaughter of saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, and frequently collaborates with rapper/producer Dred Scott, who provided this shimmering backdrop to showcase her soaring high-register vocals.

Lina – “Step Up”
Lina’s vocals are neither wispy nor oversung, and the self-described “Stranger On Earth” sounds perfectly at home relating sisterly advice over a slow, nasty groove with just the right amount of pocket.

Joy Denalane ft. Raekwon “Heaven Or Hell”
‘Nuff said, really. Peace to the Gods and the Earths and bomb the rest.
