Godfather Don - The Nineties Sessions · by R.H.S.

DOWNLOAD

“...In response to a growing demand, [Godfather Don] has agreed with No Sleep Recordings to finally unearth 17 vintage recordings done during the Cenubite and early Hydra era. Some of these were played at times on the Stretch and Bobitto show and have been sought after by collectors for years…”

I’ve been a fan ever since “Raise It Up” and followed his development as an artist from Cenobites through Diabolique. This compilation is a gift from the heavens to fans of the extended Ultramag family. Enjoy.

  1. Oh hell yes… This guy is great. Strangely, everything I heard of his after that Def Jux Fondle Em compilation (including the song made specially for it) was real weak. He was really something else during the nineties though.

  2. It IS a great album and I’m really excited it’s come out (my copy hasn’t arrived yet but I’m amped). BUT, there’s something about this and No Sleep’s similar album for Kwest tha Madd Ladd (These are My Unreleased Tracks, which is even worse about it) that really really frustrates me. I just “rage blogged” about it (ha ha) here: http://journals.aol.com/wvwalenrod/werners/entries/2007/11/21/mini-post-great-album-ideas-partially-ruined-by-a-really-bad-decision/1314

Normally, I wouldn’t spam a blog link into a comments section like this, but it really annoys me and I expect any rap nerd like myself (I mean that as a compliment, Oh Word guys) would feel the same way. Again, sorry for the crass linkage, feel free to delete this if it offends, but I’d really like to get the word out about this one.
    One.

  3. No worries Werner. I would never consider a comment linking to a genuinely related item to be spam. (yours is directly related but i’ve been known to also drop tangentially related links in comments) I think posting related links that add to the conversation is the opposite of spam – it’s relevant and useful.

Good point about the sketchy title on the Kwest album and the material left untapped by both releases. RHS had mentioned to me that a bunch of this was previously available but, because of my amateur level of rap nerdism, almost all of it is still new to me.

  4. Werner – I agree that it is disappointing that a large number of songs are just being hoarded in the vault. That’s why I didn’t feel any reservations about posting a download link on the day it dropped. I look at this as more of a period-specific compilation and retrospective than a revelatory release of previously unattainable gems. In that light, however, it’s a great listen and certainly worthy of download.

  5. Cheers, guys. Hopefully those vinyl EPs they mention will include some more of the unreleased tracks (like ACTUALLY unreleased ones). Yeah, I have a feeling they’ll just be album tracks, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

  6. I’ll definitely be picking up a copy both for review and my personal enjoyment.. or at least HOPEFULLY both.

  8. I don’t know what you cats are complaining about,i can’t see the link from here, but the godfather don shit is a blessing that it has even been released. I don’t remember anything off it as being available, except “burn”,“status”, n’“stuck off realness”.I do remember more than half of the material being played back then on Stretch n Bobbito.Recently,i know there was 150 copies of a piece of vinyl with most of the joints on there. But that was pretty goddamn limited.I only hope they drop a part 2 with all of his hydra singles n’ “slave of ny”,“i dont care”,“slaves“feat.kool keith,“murder the world“feat.scaramanga,n’ like i said all of his ill ass hydra singles.Maybe i’m so pleased with it because i lost all my bobbito tapes n all my vinyl from back then. You all really dont wanna know how that happened. If i’m missing something or if u know how to get at these No Sleep people, please e-mail me.Peace to Godfather Don.N’ peace to Bobbito,Kool Keith,Percee P, n all the former 89tec9 listeners. N’ after Diabolique, he did get looser with his style, but he’s never been weak. He’s 1 of the top 10 best producers on the mic of all time to ME. peace VERGE,AMC,NJ
