Rappers Are in Danger (live video from our show) · by Rafi Kam

A lot of you couldn’t be at the Stand Up show so over the next week or so we’re going to bring the show to you.

The show opened with Hired Gun who impressed with his lyrical craftsmanship. On-stage Dallas teased the rapper for the advanced vocab in his rhymes (specifically his use of “proletariat”), but Hired Gun brings more than an intellect and an unapologetic consciousness to the stage.

Hired also came to play with a tightly honed stage show. His set moved along at a nice clip, and even worked in a lovely energetic freestyle halfway through, which definitely got the crowd hyped. He also wisely brought his own dj Esquire. Backed up by his own sound guy he totally avoided any of the technical problems that plagued the sets that followed.

For the record, this was the first of 3 “Time’s Up” references I heard in performers’ sets that night. The most indulgent one was Channel Live who actually just paused mid-song to let O.C.‘s anthem play for 10 seconds or so after name-checking it.

Thanks to Terrence for doing all the video work and editing. The audio came out extra lovely with a camera plugged right into the sound-board. That’s also the camera that catches my bald spot in all its glory.
