(video) NYOIL - You're A Queen - Live Performance · by Rafi Kam

If you have a chance to see NYOIL live, you must do it. His performance at Stand-Up had so much soul and had the audience by turns wide-mouthed and cheering.

NYOIL delivers his “I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore” message with a dramatic b-boy meets def poetry stance, deliberately disturbing and amusing with his theatrics. And he’s a hell of a rapper too.

I’m also a fan of the original You’re A Queen video, which is charming enough to transcend its super lo-fi production. I think the concept of it was extremely smart: NYOIL turned to his female fans on MySpace and asked them for their photos to include in the video.

I hope NYOIL further develops the kinds of grass-roots approach that gained him so much attention for “Lynched” or that made him reach out to his fans for the “You’re A Queen” video. He’s experienced enough to know that a label isn’t his ticket and even says so in a recent interview at Six Shots where he calls himself “the worst thing for many cats in this industry”.

We live in an age where an artist can make their own lane and can make a living that way if they can prove to fans that they offer something special on stage, or can encompass ideas that are bigger than themselves.

NYOIL has proved to me that he can do both… I just hope he doesn’t run out of steam before he makes it all work out.

  3. That’s mad love right there. And some of your observations are very on the mark.. fact is .. trying to maintain and push thru the natural barriers takes some doing.. some energy .. that sometimes i fear i haven’t got. SHit gets rough man.. and trying to balance real life with it gets even rougher.

But i truly do have the answer to continuing the work i am doing and even pushing the envelope.. my story hasn’t ended fam.. in fact it has just begun.. I am in the process of putting together some real interesting things..
and part of that process is going to include connecting with cats like yourself and really pushing a grassroots media agenda.. bringing more strength to the bloggers..

again thank you for the opportunity to perform and for the support you and all the other bloggers have lent to my efforts.

    yours in hip hop
