Michelle Rodriguez will kick your ass · by Rafi Kam

Michelle Rodriguez as Ana Lucia on ABC's Lost
Yes, she's the toughest chick on TV but Ana Lucia still manages to keep her hair shiny and bouncy after 10 days on a beach with no styling products in sight.

I’ve been meaning to post on the blog about Michelle Rodriguez’ performance in last week’s Lost episode (the story of the tail survivors first 48 days on the island). Pardon the double meaning but Rodriguez as Ana Lucia is killing shit right now.

Ana is aggressive, trusting of her instincts (to a fault), and certainly capable of kicking my ass. Since Xena and Buffy we have seen a few powerful female warriors on TV but, unlike those two, this brooding bitch carries herself like she’s ready to scrap at any second. She cuts an intimidating presence and her take charge bossiness has rubbed many foolish Lost fans the wrong way but I can’t think of a sexier woman on TV, can you?

I realized at one point that Ana in this episode strangely evokes Walter Hill’s cult gang flick the Warriors. I’m not sure whether this homage was conscious or not but lets look at the facts.

  1. We have a level-headed soldier type attempting to lead a group of irrationals from a desperate situation through unknown land and back to safety by the beach.
  2. This female leader has a masculine quality about her creating an androgyny akin to the oddly feminine behaviors and appearances of many of the Warriors.
  3. Duh. They put her in a brown leather vest.

I started to get a little personally uncomfortable at this point. There I was with the intense desiring of Michelle Rodriguez’ Ana Lucia and all of the sudden I’m realizing how similar she is to Swan, the male leader of the Warriors. What were the ramifications here. Was I, as Ajax would say, “goin’ faggot”?

I was able to wash this doubt right out of my luxurious hair by putting things in perspective. If anything she wasn’t so much like Swan as she was a combination of Swan and the chick from Too Close for Comfort who follows him around. Yet again, thoughts of Jim J. Bullock’s old sitcom had reassured me of my own sexual orientation.

Now to show you all what I’m talking about, in the grand tradition of Conan O’Brien’s IF THEY MATED

Swan and Mercy from the Warriors
If Swan and Mercy from the Warriors mated their baby would be....

Michelle Rodriguez as Ana Lucia bops her way back to Coney
Ana Lucia from Lost. Stay real cool boppers. All the way back to Coney.

Lost airs tonight on ABC.

  1. I’ll admit, I hated her character for the longest time, but her backstory in tonight’s episode won me over. It’ll be interesting to see how things develop between her and Jack… the two of them could easily just run things on hegemony status.

  2. Appreciated since Girlfight. It’ll be interesting to see her roles expand once she has the clout to produce.

  6. Haha, I was like ‘wtf is this?’ then I saw it was a 2005 post. On point about Michelle Rodgriguez, though.

Damn, how did this show go from a great story about survivors of a plane crash to a cheesy drama about book club-hosting tools who kidnap spine surgeons? They’ve really fell off this season. Bring back the island, bring back the mysteries, and bring back John Locke!

  7. Ha at this old post popping up again.

You can check the follow-up post I did last spring here

In it I gripe about the infrequent episodes, shaggy dog subplots and how Ana Lucia was squandered.

By contrast I’ve been very pleased with this season. I no longer have the feeling of dread that I had last year that the people making the show had no idea how to write their way out of it. I’m in the minority I guess but I really like how things have developed.

  8. Ana-Lucia was a brilliant character, furious, intimidating and unapologetic. A woman that did not demand to be rescued, that took control, was hard, relentless and resourceful. An inspiration and a warning in equal measure….Bring back Ana-Lucia, it’s been dull without her!

  9. “but, unlike those two, this brooding bitch carries herself like she’s ready to scrap at any second.”

Nah, Xena be like that too.
