Don't nominate Oh Word for a Black Weblog Award · by Rafi Kam
It’s that time of year when you should remember not to nominate Oh Word for a Black Weblog Award.
See, Oh Word is not a black weblog.
I know, at times we’ve been able to pass. After all, we are a hip-hop site whose 4 primary contributors are two jews, an italian and um a black guy. But 1/4 black? Even Barack Obama is more black than that.
So while I like our odds to run for president after we turn 35, I really don’t think it makes sense for you to spend your vote on us in the Black Weblog Awards. Though we’re maligned as rap purists, in actuality we’re just not pure enough.
Also I’m not sure if we qualify as a weblog either. It’s hard to say because I haven’t seen anyone use that word in 4 years and I’m not sure what it means.

Who is to say that OhWord isn’t a ‘black’ weblog? OhWord covers themes and features content that contains so-called Black people? There was a law in America that stated that any drop of Black blood rendered someone Black. Is it possible that in Web 2.0 any favorable mention of Black artistry is equal to the Jim Crow laws determining Blackness?
Is OhWord a Black weblog in the sense that morbid ideas are broached on these pages. OhWord did say Timbaland (and Timberland) were dead.
I’d like to think that OhWord doesn’t want to be known in the blogosphere as a Black weblog because that would limit OhWord’s influence and reach. Technorati would start to underappraise the authority of OhWord. There’s also the police harrassment and illegal searches that OhWord would want to avoid if they were considered a Black weblog. Mostly though, just existing in the blogosphere as a second class citizen is enough of a reason to not want to be known as a Black weblog.

If I was Black I think I might be offended at winning a “Black weblog award.” Like what, I’m not good enough to just win a non-racial weblog award? Fuck that, son. Besides, I don’t believe anybody is Black on the internet anyway.
