Scientifik - Criminal

Scientifik
Criminal
Definite, 1994

Boston area rapper Scientifik recorded at least two LPs in the 90s. But it is Criminal, which was denied a proper domestic release due to industry politricks, that lives on in the boom-bap afterlife of folklore, vinyl bootleg, hissy dub, and mp3 download. Criminal boasts a mid-90s dream team of producers – deities RZA, Buckwild, and Diamond D contribute beats – as well as a tragic, dramatic back story. Police theorize that Scientifik shot his girlfriend to death and then turned his gun on himself in late 1996, but the case is still officially unsolved due to incomplete evidence.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this record retains a cult following. It ain’t hard to tell why the music is still captivating. On the mic Scientifik is certainly competent, and by 1994 standards he operates correctly, dropping jewelz and relating crime sagas in a soldierly, commanding voice that flexes just enough to reveal his famished intensity. It doesn’t hurt that some of the beats are absolutely tremendous bangers. The mid-album string of “East Coast Jungle,” “I Got Plans,” and “Lawtown” is as good as it gets; each song typifies that ol’ brooding, moody, Gotham City at midnight hardcore rap sound that safe harbor mixshow DJs and their insomniac fans once coveted.

Criminal is a work teeming with skills that successfully panders to the consensus of aficionados; this is the album’s primary strength and its ultimate weakness. Even if we adjust for the era’s overflow of beloved gems and our current nostalgia for the cerebral street music of yesterday, we are left with mega-quality sans distinction. Guest verses from hugely magnetic legends Diamond D and Ed OG only accentuate Scientifik’s dearth of album-carrying charisma. Criminal lacks the dimension and enjoyability of similarly shelved and/or sabotaged mid-90s projects like Jemini the Gifted One’s Scars and Pain, even if its standout songs shine brighter.

  1. Maybe you should know before you speak of what you think you do there was no evidence to what actually happened no fingerprints on the gun either in the crime scene unfortunately like most people you judged with out knowing but being that you are part of the gossiping media you wouldnt understand peace …...

  2. Maybe I should have wrote “Police allege that…”

I didn’t “judge” anything. I was relaying the STORY as I had heard and read about it. Next time I’ll make it clear that nobody really knows.

    Raquel is a sexy name.

  20. “The most Blunted” comes out tommorow…

Boston rapper Scientifik recorded two albums in the 90s, The Most Blunted” and the more familiar and recently re-issued Criminal. “The Most Blunted, considered a demo from day one was denied a proper release yet mysteriously was pressed up as a white label LP around 1996 (perhaps capitalizing upon his untimely death). So for the last 14 years the record has lived on in the boom-bap afterlife of vinyl bootlegs, hissy dub cassettes, and low quality MP3s. That is until now. Traffic Entertainment and Executive Producer Edo. G now present Scientifik’s “The Most Blunted” as it was originally recorded and intended to be released. All production duties are handled by Joe Mansfield of the Vinyl Reanimators (most famous for his “I Got To Have It” production for Edo G. and later on 7L & Esoteric). It ain’t hard to tell why the music is still captivating. On the mic Scientifik is certainly competent, and by 1992 standards he operates correctly, dropping jewelz and relating crime sagas in a soldierly, commanding voice that flexes just enough to reveal his hunger and intensity. And it doesn’t hurt that some of the beats are absolute bangers as Joe Mansfield flips samples made popular later on by Nas, DJ Premier and D.I.T.C…

  22. I just recently started thinking about Dmitri “Scientifik” and started looking for some of is music. I remember how much pride we had because of him and how much hope that he gave us by letting us see that lawtown was gonna get put on the Hip Hop map. But the day 495 was blocked up and we found out why it was like a dream deferred. We lost a great one. R.I.P

  33. I absolutely love this album and I’m glad I found the original LP.

I’ve been listening to most blunted again lately and there’s something I just remembered. I once read that Scientifik changed all the beats on that album to tracks that had some known samples in em, like on bitch I don’t need ya etc.
I can’t for the life of me remember where I read that so can anyone shed some light on this story? It really intrigues me!

  42. Hey I just came across this site. I was Scientifik’s good friend and manger before he died. I knew him and Betty very well. We worked together on his comeback EP called the Scientifik Manifesto. If this is really his sone on there you will know who I am, all those weekend trips back and forth to NYC with Sci & Bev. I don’t know what happened to him, but I do know Beverly was supportive of him, but who knows. And to all this people on here claiming to be D’s sisters etc. His mom died when he was young and she only had one son. Anyone of you know where his fam was from? Or his real last name, and his name was not Dimitri either, close but that is not what was on his birth certificate. I miss him, he was like a brother to me. We had a blast in the music biz together. Sorry he never made it out to Cali. I love you bro.

  50. RIP Scientifik. Of course, I loved this album. Underground overlooked classic, IMO. I was just listening to Lawtown 96’ Wiz Mix. And it’s a banger. He was tightening up his verses even more flawless and dope. I wish he had dropped a full length in 96. What’s the deal with that MAnifesto album that Mr.Manager was talking about?

  61. Firstly I would like to send my condolences & pay my respects to boston M.C Scientifik, his family, friends etc. Now I can’t speak for everyone ok but as a devoted fan, I have a right to know about his life & the untimely tragic events that led to his death. I understand Raquel that you are his sister (or claim to be his sister) & it seems very disrespectful & ressurects bad past memories – to bring up those events & let them resurface, but as fans & people who are sincerely interested in Scientifik, not just his music but the man himself, don’t we have a right to know. Everybody goes into the events surrounding the deaths Of Biggie, Tupac, Big L, Pimp C etc. Havent we, well I because I speak solely for myself, havent I got the right to know. I think as a devoted fan who truly loved Scientifik & his music, I have a right to know. I’m not here to judge him weather he killed his wife or not. I would just like to know about the man behind the muisc ok, his life, his interests, his passions & yes the untimely & tagic events that led to his death. Consider that. I got my hands on the Criminal E.P as soon as it came out way back in 1994. God that brings back nostalgia. People talk about the tragedy of loosing M.C’s like Biggie, Tupac, Big L, Lisa Left Eye Lopez etc, just because Scientifik wasn’t as well known as all of them doesnt mean that he is any less special, infact I think Scientifik rips Biggie & Tupac & although he didn’t rip as much metaphors, punchlines & allegories as Big L, flow wise, sound wise he was easily as good if not better. RIP to Scientifik his E.P Criminal was slept on by major record stations & industry/publicity cats, but weather commercial or underground the simple fact is he made awesome inspirational music & it can’t be denied that he was an exceptionally talented raw M.C. With a true feeling & unequivocal essence that represented the realness of the streets. Rest in peace my man.

    Sidd    Feb 25, 10:58 PM
  62. Sidd… I am his sister 1st off 2ndly I knw that my brother would prefer some of his personal things 2 remain private…if you ddnt knw now you do that he was a private person. He read alot so he was definitely knowledgable. I feel your curiosity in regards to his life.. His likes or loves so to speak was music. He thrived off his dream to make it into the industry and the world hear his words. To many he was all and every a brother, a father, a friend that you can actually call a friend. He was everything to those who were blessed to be in his presence. But in his loss of life I refuse to subject some of the things that he would prefer to remain private into the media if it was meant to be known then he would have left a trace. Which i knw he prefered not to. Just like Aaliyah and her hidden lifestyle there are things that were alleged and never discovered if I wasnt his sister I would have no problem putting all the info i have on blast which is his business … if you have questions about him as a person and likes and dislikes you can email me @ rbrocwitme@gmail.com otherwise… if its about personal info or what happened the day he and my sister in law passed on I will not release that info as respect for them both.. peace
